New Classics Weekly: Jan 22nd, 2011

68%

Not a lot of music to get really excited about yet this year, but it’s obviously still really early. The Decemberists released their best album in years this week, and as of now it tops every other release of 2011. Meanwhile, three young/still up-and-coming bands put out three equally awesome pop records: Braids, Smith Westerns, and Tennis. Other than that, full-length releases were pretty lackluster in this third week, with a few albums that are no doubt different and experimental-sounding, but not particularly good.

Two rookie bands hold the spots for the best two individual tracks of the week: Brown Recluse’s ‘Impression of a City Morning‘ and Keep Shelly in Athens’ ‘Hauntin’ Me’ are two sort of out-of-nowhere songs that I fell in love with immediately. Indie pop O.G.’s Peter Bjorn and John dropped their new single to gear us up for their upcoming record, and The Mountain Goats kicked out a sweet ballad for theirs. Kidz in the Hall, after a (I’ll say it) shitty release last year, put out the first in a new weekly series of free tracks. Hip Hop may be flooded with this model right now (G.O.O.D. Fridays being the only other worthwhile series), but ‘So Amzin’ proves that this one may be worth paying attention to. Elsewhere, Lil Wayne guests on two new cuts, Times New Viking’s new joint is gentler than usual, and Pharoahe Monch returns with his first new joint in four years. Check out the rundown below, chowderheads.
