New Music: Blitzen Trapper > Dragon’s Song

Song: Dragon’s Song
Artist: Blitzen Trapper
Album: Destroyer of the Void
Label: Sub Pop
Genre: Indie Rock / Folk
Notes: From 2nd LP
Analysis: Blitzen Trapper’s ‘Dragon’s Song’ is not a sprawling, dense epic of a fantasy song, as are most songs with “Dragon” in the title. Instead, it’s a simple, appropriately flannel-flavored, outdoorsy acoustic ditty with a slight shade of medieval melody. The lyrics have a few hidden nuggets (‘tree tops sway as they pray for the wind and the rain‘ is as good as anything you’re going to hear this year), but I’ve listened to this track at least a dozen times, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but I find it really hard to make out certain words that he’s singing. But since that is possibly just my ears and brain not cooperating, I’d still say that ‘Dragon’s Song’ is a pleasant, welcome folk track that works much better than the last Destroyer of the Void preview that we were given.
