Analysis: On Diamond Eyes, Deftones play to their strengths: swooping, brutally melodic hard rock. Not that they’ve ever really strayed from that strategy, but to be fifteen years removed from their first album and still at the top of their game – and even better –  is something to applaud. Chino Moreno’s buzzsaw voice can still reach unmatched intensities and wounded coldness on back to back songs. Diamond Eyes rose from bassist Chi Cheng, being put in a coma (which he remains in) from a serious car accident, and the band’s pain is heavily embedded in the music here. It’s a sad situation for sure, but also all the motivation that the Deftones needed to put together what is probably the best album of their career.
