Analysis: For their “comeback” album, Cypress Hill have recruited an almost impressive number of late 90s nu-metal superstars: Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, System of a Down’s Daron Malakian – not to mention long-forgotten Everlast, and Latin explosion-era Marc Anthony. Those names should pretty much sum up what Rise Up sounds like: 1999 rap/rock + weed. B-Real carried a pretty good solo album last year, but here his longtime rhyming partner Sen Dog really drags him down with his slow-witted boasts and irrational-for-his-age police hatred. A few tracks that are lighter on electric guitars and heavier on West Coast flavors stand out above the rest, but despite production appearances from on-point beatmakers Pete Rock, Jake One and DJ Khalil, Cypress refuses to leave this wretched genre out of our consciousness.

  1. Love Cypress and the whole Marijuana lyrics. Can’t wait to see them this summer on tour. Support the Decriminalization of Marijuana America.
