Song: Please Don’t ft. Santigold
Artist: David Byrne & Fatboy Slim
Album: Here Lies Love
Genre: Indie Pop
Notes: First single from 1st collaborative LP
Analysis: I don’t really get the whole Santi(o)gold phenomenon of the last few years of sampling and featuring this woman on about 45% of all hip hop/dance songs, but I won’t hold that against David Byrne & Fatboy Slim as I listen to their latest. ‘Please Don’t’ is an excerpt from a concept album about the life of the former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and her relationship with a servant from her childhood. Yeah. I understand that most of the indie-net universe has a hard-on for anything Byrne and Santigold do, but I can’t really join in on the love fest on this occasion. Between the pseudo-disco beat and Santi gratingly singing about Ronald Reagan and Henry Kissinger, any anticipation of the weirdness of this album that I had just dropped. I can’t imagine that I will be enjoying the songs featuring Tori Amos or Natalie Merchant much better, either.
